Introduction
Alginic acid is a linear polymer of β-(1→4)-Dmannosyluronic acid and α(1→4)-L-gulosyluronic acid residues, the relative amounts of which vary with the botanical source and the state of maturation of the plant.1 This product is approximately 61% mannuronic acid and 39% guluronic acid. The molecular weight of this product is approximately 240 kDa.1 The viscosity of each product is controlled by varying the source of kelp weed and by changing the process of preparation, both of which are proprietary.
